Now few words stick an icy dagger firmly in my heart quicker than “Tony award winning Broadway director” so I’m skeptical. Mozart – Don Giovanni – May 20th 2023 – A new production by Ivo van Hove. Louis production praised the music, not east because it had actual arias, but found the libretti disjointed. Champion is a revision of a work first seen at Opera Theatre of St. I didn’t see it but it got pretty good reviews. Sounds good.īlanchard – Champion – April 29th 2023 – Another Met production for Terence Blanchard following Fire Shut Up in My Bones. Strauss – Der Rosenkavalier – April 15th 2023 – It’s the slightly controversial Robert Carsen production with a super cast Lise Davidsen as the Marschallin, Erin Morley as Sofie and Isobel Leonard as Octavian. Piotr Beczała, Tammy Wilson and Christine Goerke. Wagner – Lohengrin – March 18th 2023 – It’s a new François Girard production which is promising and for those of us n Toronto it will be interesting to see whether we get to see this or his Parsifal first (if we ever do see Parsifal). It’s a starry cast centred on Sonya Yoncheva so, well sung fluff most likely. Maybe he can make more of it than the previous Met production did. It’s a new McVicar (who else) production apparently based on the idea of Russian dolls.
Giordano – Fedora – January 14th 2023 – Fedora is about as vacuous as an opera can be dramatically but it has tunes. It does feature Renée Fleming and Joyce DiDonato if that’s your thing. I have yet to see an opera based on a “hit movie” that I enjoyed at all and I didn’t enjoy Silent Night much either so I’m not overly optimistic about this. Puts – The Hours – December 10th 2022 – The opera of the film of the book. Russell Thomas, Peter Mattei and Anita Rachvelishvili all feature but the previously announced Elisabetta, Anna Netrebko, appears to have been oligarched.
It’s another McVicar production that has generally got good reviews. This appears to be the five act Paris version, performed in French this season (and shown in cinemas), performed in Italian.
2022 – Nothing is ever simple with Don Carlo(s). Verdi – La Traviata – November 5th 2022 – It’s the Mayers “frocks and furniture” production. The combination of McVicar and Radvanovsky in Rusalka was one of the best things I’ve seen in years. It’s a new David McVicar production with Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role and a generally strong cast.
